Civil Justice Institute

The Searle Civil Justice Institute (CJI) examines leading issues and produces timely research that is useful to policymakers, judges, and practitioners. The Civil Justice Institute operates through task forces, each led by a principle investigator. The task forces produce reports, executive summaries, news releases, press briefings, testimony, and conferences. CJI has organized task forces in the following areas:

  • Arbitration: This study will analyze arbitrations resulting from pre-dispute arbitration clauses in consumer contracts to create a better understanding of the impact of these clauses.
  • State Consumer Protection Litigation : The research question to be addressed in this study is: “How do state consumer protection lawsuits match with the FTC standards for consumer protection litigation?”
  • Management of Judicial Capital : How well do the skills and experience of sitting state court judges fit with the roles and responsibilities they are assigned? When do we utilize this valuable resource to maximize effectiveness and when and how do we fall short?
  • The Business of Patent Litigation
  • Scientific Evidence in the Courts
  • Cy Pres Awards
