Northwestern Law to Host Seventh Annual Public Interest Law Week
November 8-12, 1999; Fundraiser Set for November 11.
| Through a series of panel presentations and guest speakers,
Northwestern Law will introduce its students and the public to the opportunities
and challenges of public service. A highlight of the seventh annual Public
Interest Law Week will be a keynote speech by Illinois State Senator Barack
Obama on Monday, November 12 at noon. Subsequent panels will focus
on the nexis between public interest careers and substantive legal issues. In connection with Public Interest Law Week, all members of the public and community are invited to attend an auction which will raise funds for Student Funded Public Interest Fellowships(SFPIF), which will be held on Thursday, November 11 at 6:30. |

SFPIF is a nonprofit fundraising organization run entirely by students and is dedicated to providing for law students who work in unpaid summer positions at public interest organizations. In 1999, SFPIF awarded 13 grants and a total of $32,000 to students who worked at agencies such as the Chicago Council of Lawyers, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Cook County Public Defender's Office.
The auction and all presentations will be held at the Law School, 375 E. Chicago Avenue.
Sponsoring organizations of Public Interest Law Week include the Animal Legal Defense Fund, the Asian-Pacific Americans Law Student Association, the Black Law Students Association, the Diversity Coalition, the Environmental Law Society, the Feminist and Women's Coalition, the Lesbian and Gay Alliance, the Southeast Asian Law Students Association and Student Funded Public Interest Fellowships. Law firm sponsors include Sidley & Austin and Latham & Watkins.
