Diversity Education and Outreach

The mission of the Office of Diversity Education and Outreach is to offer support and guidance for minority students as they meet the challenges of becoming lawyers. Through outreach targeted to every phase of law school and career -- from applying for admission to joining alumni networks -- the Office of Diversity Education and Outreach develops, supports, and maintains the interrelationships that foster student achievement and produce satisfied graduates.

Constituencies of the Office of Diversity Education and Outreach include culturally diverse and historically underrepresented ethnic groups, such as African Americans, Pacific Asian Americans, Southeast Asian Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans, and others who are often underrepresented or marginalized, such as gay and lesbian students, older students, and students with children. The office also serves many others whose contributions to our law community outweigh their physical numbers.

Administrators and staff of the Office of Diversity Education and Outreach work closely with student organizations that are committed to diversity-related issues. The office plans and sponsors an array of special programs and events each year, including Minority Student Orientation, Diversity Week, the citywide Law Students of Color Picnic, and minority alumni dinners. In addition, by combining resources with those of the Law School and the University at large, the office provides both academic and programmatic support for student enrichment and services including curricular counseling and training seminars in test-taking strategies, time management, resume writing, and event planning.

The foremost goal of the Office of Diversity Education and Outreach is a strong, diverse Law School community that contributes outstanding and trailblazing alumni to the profession. It exists for and welcomes all serious, strong, committed students who value the differences among us and what these differences bring to the study and practice of law in the 21st century.
