STUDENTS WIN BIG IN NATIONAL TRIAL COMPETITION
Northwestern Law trial advocacy teams won big in the Annual National Trial Competition in Texas this month.
One of the Northwestern teams placed first in the annual competition, another came in second, and Northwestern law
student Christopher LaVigne won the George A. Spiegelberg Award for Best Oral Advocate. This is Northwestern's third
national championship.
The two Northwestern teams defeated all other teams and then met in the second round. The winning students include
Terra Brown '02, Christopher LaVigne '02, William Dennison '02, Brandon Spurlock '02, Scott Chadda '02, and Megan
Cunniff '03. The teams were coached by Philip A. Guentert and Dean Polales, U.S. Attorney's Office, and Maria McCarthy,
Cook County State's Attorney's Office. The trial teams were supported by a generous gift from Mayer Brown Rowe &

NORTHWESTERN LAW MOVES UP IN U.S. NEWS RANKINGS
Northwestern Law has risen from 13th to 11th in U.S. News & World Report annual rankings of
graduate schools, which issued its report on April 5. In addition, our clinical program ranks ninth and our trial
advocacy program ranks fourth. Our dispute resolution program entered the top 10 for the first time, ranking eighth.

HARVEY PITT'S BRODSKY FAMILY NORTHWESTERN JD/MBA LECTURE AVAILABLE ONLINE
U.S. Securities and Exchange Chairman Harvey Pitt delivered the inaugural Brodsky Family Northwestern JD/MBA
Lecture to a packed Lincoln Hall on Friday, April 5. The transcript of the speech can be found on the SEC website.

Olga Trujillo, an attorney and former director of the U.S. Department of Justice Special Projects Division of
the Office for Victims of Crime, and Kathryn Clarke, an educational consultant and author of a novel called "The
Breakable Vow," will discuss the ramifications of domestic violence on teenagers on April 17 (click
here). The Honorable Albert (Albie) Louis Sachs, a former freedom fighter who now serves as a Constitutional
Court of South Africa justice, will deliver a lecture on "The Rights of the Child -- A View from the Constitutional
Court of South Africa" on April 23 (click

The Office of Minority Affairs and the Law Alumni Association invite alumni and students to an evening of networking
